Can pensioners get a Free Boiler Grant?
If you have an old, broken or inefficient boiler you are likely paying more in energy bills than you should be due to the inefficiency of your boiler. Replacing your old boiler with a modern A-rated boiler can be expensive. Instead, you can receive grant funding towards a more efficient A-rated Boiler to reduce your energy bills through the UK Government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme if you receive Pension Credit (not to be confused with a standard state pension). You, or anyone in your household will need to receive Pension Credit (guarantee element).

UK energy companies are funding ECO to improve home efficiency for vulnerable household
The UK government has established the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) to support homeowners in improving their home’s energy efficiency and decreasing heating expenses, particularly those who are vulnerable or low-income.
Funding for this program is generated by a “Green Tax” on utility bills, which is now being allocated to households in need of new boilers and insulation. This financing is managed by major UK energy firms, including British Gas, EON, EDF, Scottish Power, Octopus, Shell, OVO, and Bulb. How you could save £580 annually by having an A-rated boiler installed.
If your current boiler is over 10 years old, it’s likely to be unreliable and costly to operate. Upgrading to an A-rated boiler through the free boiler scheme can be a wise decision.
A-rated boilers have a minimum efficiency of 90%, whereas older models may only be 60% efficient, wasting 40% of the heating cost. According to the Energy Saving Trust, replacing an old, inefficient boiler with a new A-rated combi condensing boiler can save you up to £580 annually.
What is the process when applying for a Boiler Grant under the ECO Scheme?
First, you’ll need to check if you’re eligible for the scheme. Eligibility criteria include your income, property type, and the age and efficiency of your current heating system. Next, we will provide an accredited ECO installer who will assess your home. The installer will handle the application process on your behalf, including arranging the necessary paperwork and approvals.
Once your application is approved, the installer will carry out the work at no cost to you. The installation process typically takes a few hours. After the installation, the installer will provide you with information on how to use your new heating system or insulation to maximise efficiency and savings.
